HM Courts & Tribunals Service
Her Majesty’s Courts and Tribunals Service is an executive agency of the Ministry of Justice. It was created on the 1st of April 2011 by the merger of Her Majesty’s Courts Service and the Tribunals Service.
HMCTS is responsible for the administration of the criminal, civil and family courts and tribunals in England and Wales and non-devolved tribunals in Scotland and Northern Ireland.
HMCTS aims to ensure that the rule of law is upheld by providing access to justice, whether as victims or witnesses of crime, defendants accused of crimes, consumers in debt, children at risk of harm, businesses involved in commercial disputes or as individuals asserting their employment rights or challenging the decisions of government bodies.
Each year HMCTS handles over two million criminal cases, 1.8 million civil claims, more than 150,000 family law disputes and almost 800,000 tribunal cases.
